The English film producer & director Danny Boyle, born on the 20th October 1956 in Radcliffe, Lancashire, is most famous for his work on the 1996 movie Trainspotting. His other recent works include the science-fiction films, 28 Days Later & Sunshine.
Danny Boyle was born into an Irish Catholic family,his mother was from Ballinasloe, Co Galway, Ireland and his father was from England. Boyle, as a teenager seriously considered adopting priesthood and attended religious schools to meet his goals. Danny Boyle renounced the idea after being discouraged from the idea by a priest. Danny Boyle attended Bolton’s Thornleigh Salesian College followed by the University of Wales, Bangor. While studying at the university, Danny dated the English actress Frances Barber.
Danny Boyle’s entertainment career started in theatre, his first assignment was with the Joint Stock Theatre Company followed by the Royal Court Theatre where he worked as Artistic Director between 1982 and 1985 before advancing to the role of Deputy Director in 1985. Boyle’s major productions in this period were Howard Brenton's The Genius, Howard Barker's Victory and Edward Bond's Saved, which received the Time Out Award. During the same period Danny Boyle got the opportunity to direct five plays for the Royal Shakespeare Company.
In 1980, Boyle began working as a television producer for BBC Northern Ireland and produced Alan Clarke’s short film Elephant and then directed shows like Not Even God Is Wise Enough, Arise and Go Now, Scout, For The Greater Good and two episodes named Masonic Mysteries & Cherubim and Seraphim of television series Inspector Morse. The noted BBC2 series Mr. Wroe's Virgins was also directed by Danny Boyle.
In 1994 Danny Boyle made his directorial debut on the big screen with the successful British crime thriller Shallow Grave followed by the commercially successful film Trainspotting which was based on Irvine Welsh’s novel. This movie got recognition as an icon of the British Cinema.
The Trainspotting team of actor Ewan McGregor writer John Hodge and producer Andrew Macdonald internationally rose to prominence after the release of Trainspotting. Seizing the opportunity Danny Boyle along with his team relocated to Hollywood to make a deal with a US studio. Danny Boyle was little skeptical in choosing work initially, as he rejected an offer of directing a movie for the Alien franchise. His first major Hollywood movie came in the form of the 1997 romantic black-comedy A Life Less Ordinary.
Danny Boyle made his next film entitled The Beach followed by a 2002 British post-apocalyptic science fiction movie 28 Days Later in which the screenplay was by Alex Garland. In between these two films, Boyle directed two television movies entitled Vacuuming Completely Nude In Paradise & Strumpet for the BBC, the movies were aired in 2001. Danny Boyle has also directed a comedy short film Alien Love Triangle casting Irish actor Kenneth Branagh.
In 2004, Danny directed Millions scripted by Frank Cottrell Boyce. Danny Boyle next cast Irish actor Cillian Murphy in the science-fiction film Sunshine in 2007.
Boyle's upcoming movies are Ponte Tower and Slumdog Millionaire based on the real life story of Dev Patel, an impoverished child from Mumbai who appears on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Boyle is also planning to direct movies entitled The Texas Killing Fields, Solomon Grundy & Porno.
